Bruce Lee was an enigmatic, legendary figure at the time of his death in 1973. His popularity has never waned and this 2001 documentary on the black belt movie star attempts to explain some of his magnetic appeal. Included in this biographical film is footage of The Game of Death, the film that Lee was involved in at the time of his death. Pieced together by Lee aficionado John Little, the film’s finale is a flurry of images of the master in action for over 30 minutes.
First, the movie is about Renowned French director François Truffaut is “at the top of his form” (The Hollywood Reporter) in this whimsical, lively story about an eccentric casanova who loves every woman he meetsliterally! Irresistibly “charming” (Leonard Maltin) and “witty” (Independent Film Journal), thisplayful romantic comedy is heartwarming, hilarious and highly entertaining! Bertrand Morane (Charles Denner) is a ladies’ man like no other. Wholly obsessed with the female species, he goesto outrageous lengths for the prospect of a fleeting romantic encounter. But when he documents all of his passionate flings in a racy autobiography, he piques the interestboth personally and professionallyof a beautiful and provocative editor named Genevieve (Brigitte Fossey). And as the two begin to play the game of proverbial predator and prey, Bertrand is surprised to discover that he might just be the one who gets trapped by true love!.
I really enjoyed the performace of Chantal Balussou and Chantal Balussou. The rest of the cast was solid as well. The cast includes Henri Agel, Chantal Balussou, Nella Barbier, Anne Bataille, Nathalie Baye.
It’s unsurprising that a movie written in rhyming verse would have stilted or self-conscious moments–but the sumptuous beauty, sinuous rhythms, and cinematic intricacies of Yes may astonish viewers who expect something stuffy or antiquarian. The plot is little more than an affair between an unnamed Irish-American biologist (Joan Allen, once the queen of repression in The Ice Storm, now becoming an art-house sexpot in this and Off the Map) and an unnamed Middle-Eastern chef (Simon Abkarian, Ararat), yet the movie explores just about everything: Marriage, religion, international politics, motherhood, and the nature of zero, while travelling from London to Belfast to Beirut to Havana. Writer/director Sally Potter (Orlando, The Tango Lesson) has enormous ambitions; Yes abounds with complex ideas and daring flourishes, both verbal and visual, juxtaposing the austere and the erotic, intellect and grief. If not everything succeeds, what doesn’t is more than made up for by what does. Also featuring Sam Neill (The Piano, Jurassic Park) as Allen’s aloof husband and Shirley Henderson (Topsy-Turvy) as a housecleaner with a philosophical perspective on dirt. –Bret Fetzer

An outrageously sexy comedy starring Josh Hartnett (PEARL HARBOR, BLACK HAWK DOWN) and Shannyn Sossamon (A KNIGHT’S TALE), 40 DAYS AND 40 NIGHTS is another hilarious hit from the producers of NOTTING HILL and BRIDGET JONES’S DIARY. On the heels of a disastrous breakup and a string of unfulfilling romantic conquests, Matt Sullivan (Hartnett) yearns to become a better, more complete person. In the midst of his despair, he chooses to test himself by making a vow of no sex whatsoever for 40 days and 40 nights! Personally, I thought Josh Hartnett was incredible, but wasn’t too impressed with Shannyn Sossamon.

Blood flows as the action in Trinity Blood shifts from Rome and Western Europe to Carthage and Constantinople, the capital of the vampire empire. Esther Blanchett and Abel Nightroad forge an unlikely alliance with the vampire nobles, Asta and Ion. They’re working for Cardinal Catherine and the Empress to promote better relations between the Vatican and the Empire. Pitted against them are the troops of the Department of Inquisition; Auto-Jägers, zombies created from vampire corpses; the Empress’ Janissaries; and any number of turncoats. Blood, bombs, knives, and shells fly. Apparently forgetting his vow never to kill again, Abel single-handedly destroys two aerial warships and their crews. At times, the plot seems to be careening along like an unattended grocery cart on a steep hill, but no one can deny Trinity Blood delivers plenty of action. (Rated TV 14, suitable for ages 16 and older: graphic violence, grotesque imagery, nudity, tobacco and alcohol use, offensive religious imagery.) –Charles Solomon
